Buy Nothing Christmas
My wife and I are really struggling this year. We both love Christmas but for various reasons, haven’t been very highly motivated to purchase gifts this year. Part of the reason is that we’re trying to save money for a couple of fairly expensive things we would like to have in 2007.
We’d like to own a house. We’ve been renters since we’ve been married and are tired of paying off someone else’s mortgage. Currently, we’re housesitting a beautiful, large house in Portsmouth, VA, but we’ll need a place to live as of June 1st.
The other thing isn’t quite so simple. We’d like to become parents. We’re hoping the stork will pay a visit to the Gomez household in the coming year.
So we haven’t really bought anything yet (at least I haven’t), and it’s my wife’s birthday next Tuesday, too. So why do I feel so guilty?
I heard about Buy Nothing Christmas a while ago and always thought people were a bit loony to skip the giving altogether. But now I’m not so sure. My wife and I always end up buying stuff we don’t really need just so we’ll have packages to tear open Christmas morning.
There may not be a whole lot beneath the tree this year and perhaps that’s a good thing?
